The interdisciplinary academic programs at the Segal Design Institute provide undergraduate and graduate students with collaborative training at the forefront of innovation and human-centered design. Mary Ann Lazarus, FAIA, LEED Fellow, is an architect and educator working on accelerating shifts in design of the built environment to sustainable and resilient outcomes. Undergraduate Study
In this 15-month program, students earn their master of science degree while collaborating in teams on human-centered design projects. "Each design proposal is approximately 3,000 square meters and is developed individually by each student in relation to societal and cultural developments, with an emphasis on sustainable solutions. His focus on resilient design began following Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast—leading to publication of The New Orleans Principles, which he edited. He has worked on resilience initiatives for the cities of New York, Boston, and Washington, DC, and he co-led the effort to create the LEED pilot credits on Resilient Design. He has lectured and written widely about resilient design, including a chapter in the book, Climate Adaptation and Resilience Across Scales, published in 2022 by Routledge. She plans to continue her work as a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows, after which she’ll join the Harvard Department of Economics as an assistant professor. Russo also plans to continue helping other budding economists since she believes in the importance of supporting other students. “We may be able to improve targeting and achieve more cost-effective conservation by adjusting the CRP’s scoring system,” Russo argues. Opportunities may exist to scale the incremental changes under study for other conservation programs and carbon offset markets more generally.

We do not offer a PhD program, but we're part of a larger ecosystem of centers and labs pursuing design-related academic research at Northwestern.
